2014年夏天，实力派男星山田孝之受邀拍摄山下敦弘导演执导的《斩杀自己》。影片结尾，他所饰演的慎之助意识到自身所存在的邪恶时，大彻大悟之下横刀自杀。但是在正式拍摄的时候，山田犹豫再三没有下手，他认为道具刀无法真正斩杀自己，其在不知不觉间已经将自己变成了慎之助而迟迟无法走出角色。拍摄中止一周后，山下导演收到山田寄来的包裹，里面是名为《东京都北区赤羽》的漫画，抱着种种疑问导演登门拜访了山田。山田讲述漫画中的人物均为非虚构的真实存在，他为这些任务的自然状态所感动，于是下定决心搬去赤羽居住。为了记录下山田孝之内心变化的关键时刻，山下敦弘与相熟的纪录片导演松江哲明联手跟随山田来到赤羽，目击下这名失去自我的演员和漫画家以及当地人们的交流与碰撞……
