ある街の病院にある療養病棟。そこは、余命数か月と判断される人や、病状に加え認知症などで日常生活が困難な人がたどり着く場所。その最前線に立つ看護師、辺見歩は、意思表示の難しい患者さんのわずかな変化も見逃さず、そこでの日々が最善であるよう努める。 非常勤で一般病棟からやってきた医師、広野誠二も戸惑いながら、辺見とともに患者さんや、その家族の事情に巻き込まれ、関わっていく。ただ苦痛を取り除くだけでなく、その人らしい「限りある生のかたち」を求めて日々奮闘する。 そして、訪れた最期から、その人なりに「生き切った命」を見届ける証人となる。 患者さんや、その家族、そして彼らと関わる医師や看護師の、葛藤や、怒りや、悲しみや、小さな喜びや、笑顔や素顔の先にあるドラマを通して、「死を迎える」ことと、「生きる」ことの意味を問いかける。それは、私たちの未来への一筋の光につながっていく。
