Sommer er en dramaserie om en familie og dens generationer med fokus på, hvad der sker, når magtbalancen i familien pludselig ændres. Det er en historie om forældre og børn - om glæder og sorger - og om sammenhold og splittelse, inden for og på tværs af generationerne. Sommer handler om den idealistiske, unge læge Jacob Sommer der vender hjem på et kort visit da skæbnen pludselig spiller ham et pus. Jacobs far, Christian, er nemlig så syg at han ikke kan passe familiens praksis, og det ændrer planerne for hele familien Sommer.
